Did you know? Irish Week 1

As always, thanks to both schools' sports information departments and ESPN Stats & Info for these tidbits.

  • Notre Dame and Navy have met 125 times, including 85 straight years since 1927. But they have never faced off in an opener.

  • Notre Dame is one of 13 FBS schools to hold opponents to fewer than 21 points per game over each of the past two seasons.

  • Manti Te'o (324 career tackles) enters 2012 eighth on the program's all-time tackles list, with a good chance of climbing as high as third with a season similar to his last two.

  • The Irish's seven rushing touchdowns in last year's win over Navy was their most in a game since 1992 against Purdue.

  • Head coach Brian Kelly is 5-0 the last five times he has played a first-time starter at quarterback. Notre Dame is 14-6 in its last 20 games featuring a new starting quarterback.

  • The game, which will be played in Dublin, Ireland, marks the third time in Notre Dame's history that it has played overseas. The Irish topped Miami (Fla.), 40-15, in Tokyo in 1979 and beat Navy, 54-27, in Dublin’s Croke Park in 1996.

  • Everett Golson will be the first Notre Dame quarterback since Ron Powlus in 1994 to make his college and starting debut away from Notre Dame Stadium.

  • The Irish have won their last 13 openers when scoring first, spanning back to a 1986 loss to Michigan. Notre Dame scored first in the 2009 and 2010 openers but gave up a score first last season, along with the 2003-08 openers.
