Cut-day odds and ends

Random thoughts as the Oakland Raiders pared their roster to 53:

  • I could see the Raiders considering adding reserve safety/special teams star C.J. Spillman. He was cut by the 49ers on Saturday.

  • Another interesting player is linebacker Nico Johnson, who was cut by the Chiefs. He was a fourth-round pick last year out of Alabama and a leader on one of the best defenses in the country. The Raiders could use some depth at linebacker.

  • A player I like is receiver Vincent Brown, who was waived-injured by the Chargers. He is supposed to be close to being healthy. I think he could instantly help the Raiders.

  • Perhaps the Raiders could look at linebacker Shayne Skov. He was cut by the 49ers, and nearly signed with the Raiders after going undrafted. He played for Oakland defensive coordinator Jason Tarver at Stanford.

  • The Raiders can always use more receivers. Perhaps they could look Stephen Hill. The 2012 second-round pick was cut by the Jets. Yes, Hill has been a bust, but it wouldn’t hurt to give him a look.
