At last, it's Washington State

The witch is dead. Ding. Dong.

Washington State, losers of 16 consecutive Pac-10 games, and perhaps the most ridiculed BCS conference program, beat Oregon State 31-14 on Saturday in front of a stunned Reser Stadium crowd.

The victory probably means that Paul Wulff will be the Cougars coach in 2011. There's been a lot of talk about the program improving this year. But a win always trumps talk.

The Cougars triumphed by winning the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. They rushed for 221 yards and held the Beavers to 97 on the ground -- and just 261 total yards.

A Washington State defense that ranks among the worst in the nation, has held its last two foes -- California and Oregon State -- to just 34 points combined.

As for Oregon State, losers of three of its past four games, it falls to 4-5 on the season. It needs to win two of its final three games to become bowl eligible: USC, at Stanford and Oregon.

That's a longshot.

A huge win for Washington State. Pullman will be rocking tonight. The line outside "The Coug" will be very, very long.

Things will be a little less upbeat in Corvallis.
