There were few surprises on UCLA's spring depth chart, starting with no thunderclap at quarterback.
There's an "OR" between Kevin Prince and Richard Brehaut, and touted true freshman Brett Hundley is dutifully listed at No. 5 on the depth chart. Prince won't be able to do full-contact work this spring since he's still recovering from knee surgery.
Here's the quote on the QBs included in the spring prospectus from coach Rick Neuheisel:
Our quarterbacks must continue to improve their preparation, decision-making and performance at this position and I am confident that they will. Kevin has been impressive at times and we expect he will continue to improve. We threw a lot at Richard in his first year as a starter and he responded well. His experience will certainly benefit him going forward. We want to make sure we take a good look at all our available candidates this Spring and gauge their progress.
Anyone think Hundley will end up No. 5 on the depth chart after spring practices?
The first-team offensive line: Sean Sheller and Mike Harris at the tackles. Kai Maiava back at center. Jeff Baca and Chris Ward at the guards. Maiava, the 2009 starter, missed all of last season with a broken ankle, while Baca, who owns 21 career starts, was academically ineligible.
The first-team defensive line: Datone Jones at left end and Owamagbe Odighizuwa on the right side; Cassius Marsh and Justin Edison at the tackles. Jones missed all of last season with a broken foot.
The linebackers: Former safety Glenn Love is on the strongside -- stepping in for Akeem Ayers -- Patrick Larimore in the middle and Sean Westgate on the weakside. Because Larimore is out this spring (shoulder), sophomore Jordan Zumwalt will step up from No. 2. Love was the backup on the weakside last year. MLB Steve Sloan isn't returning for his redshirt senior season.
The secondary: Aaron Hester and Sheldon Price are the corners. Tony Dye is the strong safety and Dalton Hilliard is No. 1 free safety, where Rahim Moore was last year. But Hilliard will miss spring practices (knee), so Alex Mascarenas will run with the ones. Courtney Viney is listed third at left corner behind Hester and redshirt freshman Anthony Jefferson.
Here's a list of the players who are out for all of spring practices, which start on Tuesday, March 29.
WR Jerry Johnson (ankle)
