CARSON, Calif. -- It was a big weekend for USC recruits at The Home Depot Center, as USC commit Max Tuerk (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Santa Margarita), USC target Deontay Greenberry (Fresno, Calif./Washington Union) and 2013 recruit Michael Hutchings (Concord, Calif./De La Salle) all ended their seasons with wins in their respective CIF state bowl games.
Santa Margarita matched up against San Jose Bellarmine in the Division I game and the Eagles clawed their way to a 42-37 victory, thanks to a 1-yard touchdown plunge by 2013 quarterback Johnny Stanton on a fourth-down play with 16 seconds remaining. It was a similar script to the game one week earlier, when Stanton scored the winning touchdown with less than a minute remaining, to give Santa Margarita the Pac-5 championship over San Clemente.
Tuerk again led the way up front for the Eagles and their dominant ground game, but Stanton stole the show. The junior threw four touchdown passes and more than 300 yards, and the Eagles offensive line got it done during crunch time. After setting the Eagles up with a first-and-goal from the 9-yard line down 37-36, Stanton rushed four times, eventually crossing the goal line for the winning score.
