BERKELEY, Calif. -- USC is back on track. California is not.
The Trojans played solid football in their 30-3 win over Cal.
But this one felt like a referendum on the Bears. And the Bears failed to make their case.
Cal didn't quit. It didn't commit a bunch of turnovers. It just got whipped.
For the second consecutive week.
A string of 65 unanswered points only ended with a field goal with 11 minutes left in the game.
Obviously, many of us -- yes, that includes the Pac-10 blog -- overrated Cal.
USC is off next week. It will get healthy -- a number of players are expected back for the visit to Notre Dame on Oct. 17. It appears headed toward a red-letter date at Oregon on Oct. 31.
California also is off. The Bears need to find some answers. Once ranked sixth in the nation, they will now tumble out of the national rankings.
They head to UCLA on Oct. 17, their season teetering on the brink of collapse.
