Police make arrest in assault of Oregon kicker

Police charged a suspect with second-degree assault Wednesday in connection with the brawl early Sunday morning that sent Oregon kicker Rob Beard to the hospital with serious facial injuries.

The suspect, Maurice Dion Peterson, was identified as a 20-year-old from Eugene. The statement from Eugene police said the case is still active and the investigation ongoing and no other details would be released at this time.

Beard, 19, has been released from the hospital and is expected to make a complete recovery. His parents told the Eugene Register-Guard that Beard could be ready for spring practices, which begin March 30.

Beard handled kickoffs and long field goals for the Ducks in 2009. He is expected to compete for the starting job in 2010 with the departure of Morgan Flint.
