OUT OF OUR LEAGUE: After a strong first two weeks of the season, the Pac-10 fell on hard times in week three and the conference's mark has dipped to 10-10 against non-conference foes.
HOME/ROAD: In 24 games involving Pac-10 teams so far this season, the home team has won 17 times, the visitors seven times. In four Conference games, the home team stands at 3-1.
ARIZONA: Wildcats rank second in the Pac-10 in both scoring defense (17.3) and total defense (230.3) and have surrendered just four TDs through three games. . . . QB Willie Tuitama tops the Pac-10 in TD passes with eight in first three games. . . . Teammate RB Nic Grigsby leads the league in rushing TDs with six. Grigsby tops the Pac-10 and ranks ninth in the nation in rushing at 125.3 yards per game. . . . OLB Sterling Lewis has led the Cats in tackles the last two games. . . . With 12 catches for 136 yards at New Mexico, WR Mike Thomas went past the 200 career reception mark. He now has 211 for his career and currently leads the Pac-10 in receptions with 26 (8.7 per game) and is the only receiver in the Conference averaging better than 100 receiving yards per game (100.7). None of this should come as a surprise as Thomas led the Pac-10 in receiving last year.
ARIZONA STATE: Fourth straight home game for ASU is a big one vs. No. 3-ranked Georgia. . . . Georgia is the highest-ranked non-conference opponent to appear at Sun Devil Stadium since top-ranked Nebraska in 1996. The Sun Devils upset the Cornhuskers 19-0 in that one. . . . DE Dexter Davis leads the Pac-10 in tackles for loss (6) and is co-leader in QB sacks (4). . . . Veteran QB Rudy Carpenter has started 34 straight games at quarterback, tied for the longest such streak in the nation with Purdue's Curtis Painter. Carpenter is 23-11 in those starts. . . . With two TD passes vs. UNLV last week, Carpenter upped his career total to 71 scoring throws. That's good for eighth place on the Pac-10 career list. Former USC Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer (1998-2002) is in seventh place at 72.
CALIFORNIA: After an open date, Golden Bears begin a stretch of four of the next five at home with Colorado State next week. . . . QB Kevin Riley put up a school-record 58 pass attempts in loss at Maryland. He completed 33 for 423 yards, both numbers being the third-highest single-game totals in Cal history. . . . Senior WR LaReyelle Cunningham tallied career bests with seven receptions for 138 yards at Maryland. . . . TB Jahvid Best, despite being limited to just 25 yards rushing at Maryland, nevertheless had his third consecutive game over 200 allpurpose yards. He had 65 yards receiving and 135 yards on kick returns for a total of 225 yards. . . . OLB Zack Follett forced his ninth career fumble in game at Maryland. . . . In Pac-10, only Cal (93.0) and USC (51.5) are allowing opponents fewer than 100 yards rushing.
OREGON: Ducks are 28-1 in non-conference home games in coach Mike Bellotti's tenure. . . . PK Matt Evensen earned Pac-10 special teams player of the week honors for connecting on all four field goal attempts in heavy winds in Ducks' double-overtime win at Purdue. . . . Ducks scored only two offensive touchdowns at Purdue with RB LeGarrette Blount getting both of them, including the game-winner on a 3-yard run in the second overtime period. LeGarrette rushed for 132 yards on just 12 carries--11.0 yards per rush. . . . Oregon ranks fourth in the nation in rushing at 323.3 yards per game. That's more than 100 yards per game more than runnerup Cal (210.7) in Pac-10 rushing stats. . . . DE Will Tukuafu is Pac-10 co-leader in QB sacks (4) and ranks second in league in tackles for loss (5).
OREGON STATE: Frosh RB Jacquizz Rodgers rushed for 110 yards and two TDs in win vs Hawai'i. He is the first true freshman to rush for 100 yards in a game for the Beavers since Steven Jackson in 2001 at USC. . . . OSU defense limited Hawai'i to 207 yards total offense (57 rushing, 154 passing), the Warriors' lowest offensive total in a game since 1998. . . . Beavers picked off three passes vs. Hawai'i after not getting any interceptions in first two games. . . . WRs Shane Morales and Sammie Stroughter rank 2-4, respectively, in receiving yards in the Pac-10 and are the most potent duo in the Conference with a combined 43 receptions for 539 yards and five TDs. . . . QB Lyle Moevao (307.3) joins ASU's Rudy Carpenter (325.0) as the only two QBs in the Conference averaging better than 300 yards per game passing.
STANFORD: Cardinal meet neighboring San Jose State in the Bill Walsh Legacy Game this week. It is the lone home game in a five game stretch Stanford. . . . Win would give Stanford its first 2-2 start since 2005. . . . Spartans are coached by former Arizona (1987-2000) head man Dick Tomey. . . . RB Toby Gerhart has scored four of Stanford's eight TDs this season. . . . Cardinal ranks second in Pac-10 in punt returns at 17.4 yards per return. That's helped by WR Richard Sherman's 21-yard return for a TD of a blocked punt last week. . . . CB Kris Evans one of only three Pac-10 players with two interceptions through first three games.
UCLA: Bruins begin a three-game homestand against Arizona this week. . . . MLB Reggie Carter had a busy day at BYU with a game-high 20 tackles. . . . USC: QB Mark Sanchez and MLB Rey Maualuga picked up Pac-10 offensive and defensive player of the week honors for their roles in Trojans' 35-3 win against Ohio State. It is the second offensive player of the week plaque for Sanchez in as many games. . . . Sanchez has tossed seven TD passes in SC's first two games this year. He has at least two TD passes in each of his last four starts. . . . USC defense piled up 11 tackles for loss vs. Ohio State (-52 yards), including five QB sacks (-36). . . . USC defense has not allowed a touchdown in its last seven quarters and has surrendered only one in first two games. . . . Crowd of 93,607 for Ohio State-USC was largest for the Trojans since 93,458 for UCLA game in 1993. . . . USC has won its last 15 September games. . . . OLB Clay Matthews has forced a fumble in each of the first two games.
