USC hires quarterbacks coach

TEMPE, Ariz. -- USC has hired Clay Helton, Arkansas State's offensive coordinator, to coach quarterbacks, Trojans coach Lane Kiffin confirmed after a fire alarm broke up a session with the NCAA infractions committee.

Helton was at Memphis in 2009, where his offense gained 27 first downs and 403 yards in a 56-28 loss to Kiffin's Tennessee team.

Kiffin said he still plans to hire an offensive coordinator -- or split the job between two coaches -- but he will call plays.

ESPN's Bruce Feldman first reported the hiring.
