PITTSBURGH -- The debut of the Ben Roethlisberger Show did not have much better timing than the Steelers offense did in a 16-9 loss to the Titans.
It came two days after one of the Steelers’ worst season-opening losses in recent memory, a defeat that was even more deflating since three players were lost to season-ending injuries, including center Maurkice Pouncey.
But the show, as they say, must go on.
And Roethlisberger will be hosting a show every Tuesday during the season on 93.7 The Fan. Here are some highlights from his first show:
Roethlisberger said he meets individually with Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and offensive coordinator Todd Haley on days after a game. Tomlin talks to Roethlisberger to gauge the pulse of the team. Haley and Roethlisberger talk about what worked and what didn’t work in the previous game. Very little went right last Sunday, but Roethlisberger isn’t among those blaming Haley for the offense’s woes. “We run with him, he’s our boss. We just didn’t capitalize on the plays that he called,” Roethlisberger said on his show. “It wasn’t all bad. There were some good things we did on offense.”
Roethlisberger couldn’t say enough about the job Kelvin Beachum did on Sunday after taking over for Pouncey. Beachum had not practiced at center the previous two weeks as the super-sub had been getting reps at guard, tackle and tight end. Despite this, Roethlisberger said, the two did not have any bad snap exchanges. “Steelers Nation needs to appreciate what he did,” Roethlisberger said on his show. Given the praise Roethlisberger lavished on Beachum it was not surprising that Tomlin later said the Steelers are sticking with Beachum at center for now.
Roethlisberger stopped by the offensive line meeting room on Monday to deliver a message to the beleaguered unit. “I told them I believe in them,” Roethlisberger said on his show. “I’ve got faith in them.” The loss of Pouncey will be difficult to overcome, and Roethlisberger said it was hard to see the three-time Pro Bowler suffer such a serious injury for several reasons. “Pouncey is absolutely our rock on that offensive line,” Roethlisberger said on his show. “He’s a good friend of mine.”
