Yearbook, Dec. 13: A historic Heisman

Dec. 13, 1997: Manti Te'o almost joined him but fell just short of becoming the second primarily defensive player to win the Heisman Trophy.

The first and still only? Charles Woodson, whose cornerback (and receiver/returner) exploits with the Michigan Wolverines helped him claim the prize on this day 15 years ago, beating out Washington State's Ryan Leaf (third place) and Tennessee's Peyton Manning (second).

And, as is to be expected with an award dominated by backs quarter and running, Woodson's win wasn't expected; at the time it was dubbed "one of the biggest surprises in the 63-year history of the Heisman."
