Yearbook, Oct. 2: The NFL in Mexico City

Oct. 2, 2005: Jaunts to London are commonplace now, but just seven years ago yesterday there never had been a regular-season NFL game played outside the United States.

Enter Mexico City, which is what the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers did for their Estadio Azteca meeting seven years ago today at 7,700 feet up.

The Cardinals won 31-14, powered by Josh McCown's 385 passing yards and Neil Rackers' six field goals, but far more eye-opening was the attendance number for futbol americano: 103,467, which set the all-time league mark (later broken at Cowboys Stadium) and paved the way, at least somewhat, for those later international trips.
