Yearbook, Oct. 7: Walter Payton sets record

Oct. 7, 1984: Before there was any hint of a "Super Bowl Shuffle," there was Walter Payton pounding the ball from the Chicago Bears backfield -- so much so that on this day 28 years ago, Sweetness broke Jim Brown's career rushing record on a six-yard, third-quarter run in a win over the New Orleans Saints at Soldier Field. (Click here for a more detailed recap.)

Seven running backs have since passed Brown's mark of 12,312 yards, but the late Payton's name stayed atop the NFL's list -- with 16,726 yards -- until Emmitt Smith passed him in 2002.
