SAN DIEGO -- The NFL released the preseason schedule on Thursday. Dates and times haven’t been announced, but here’s a first look at the opponents for the San Diego Chargers:
Week 1 (Aug. 11-15) at Tennessee Titans
Comment: Fired just seven games into his second season as head coach of the Titans last year, Ken Whisenhunt returns to Nashville to face his old team as offensive coordinator of the Chargers for the first time. The Chargers hold a 7-2 edge over the Titans in exhibition play. San Diego opens on the road during preseason play for the first time since 2005. The Chargers also host the Titans during the regular season this year.
Week 2 (Aug. 18-22) vs. Arizona Cardinals
Comment: The Chargers face the Cardinals in exhibition play for a third straight season. San Diego’s defense totaled six sacks in a 22-19 win at University of Phoenix Stadium last year. San Diego has a 13-9 advantage over the Cardinals in preseason play.
Week 3 (Aug. 28) at Minnesota Vikings
Comment: Chargers new offensive line coach Jeff Davidson returns to Minnesota to face his former team for the first time. The Chargers played in Minnesota last year, but this time San Diego will compete in the Vikings’ new digs, U.S. Bank Stadium, which is scheduled to open this fall. New free agent cornerback Casey Hayward also will face a familiar foe from his time with the Green Bay Packers in the NFC North rival Vikings. The Chargers are 3-10-1 all-time against Minnesota in preseason play.
Week 4 (Sept. 1-2) vs. San Francisco 49ers
Comment: San Diego finishes exhibition play against the 49ers for the 12th time since 2002. This year, the Chargers will get their first look at a San Francisco team lead by new head coach Chip Kelly. The Chargers are 20-24 all-time in exhibition play against the 49ers.
