Chargers hire Richard Smith as LBs coach, announce full coaching staff

SAN DIEGO -- New head coach Anthony Lynn ultimately retained nine coaches from departed head coach Mike McCoy’s staff from the Los Angeles Chargers' 2016 season.

The latest hire by Lynn was adding former Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Richard Smith as his linebackers coach.

Lynn also confirmed earlier reports that John Lott will serve as his strength coach and started work at Chargers Park on Monday. The Chargers also will add an assistant strength coach to work with Lott.

Lynn’s coaching staff also includes his son D’Anton Lynn, who played defensive back at Penn state and served as a defensive coach with Lynn while both worked for the Buffalo Bills.

In all, the Chargers will have 20 coaches on Lynn’s staff.

Overall, Lynn said he’s pleased with the experience on his staff, which includes two former head coaches in offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt and defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, along with longtime NFL coach George Stewart serving as the teams special teams coordinator.

Lynn said having that experience on his staff will allow him to focus on leading the team.

“I really have a chance to be the head coach of this team and let these men do their job,” Lynn said. “It can be too much when you’re heavily involved on one side of the ball and you’re trying to be the head coach the organization."
