Morning links: Freeney makes cut

Good morning. Our ESPN NFLRANK survey debuted this week. And a couple of players from the San Diego Chargers appeared on the list, as we unveiled 100-91 on offense and defense.

Cornerback Brandon Flowers was No. 92 on the list, and edge rusher Dwight Freeney was ranked at No. 91.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, In the previous 11 years before his injury-shortened 2013 season, Freeney ranked fourth in the NFL with 107.5 sacks, trailing only Jared Allen, Julius Peppers and DeMarcus Ware. I’m interested to see if Freeney can get back to that type of production in 2014.

Tom Krasovic of U-T San Diego talks with Freeney, who says Zach Miller's cut block that injured Sean Lissemore's ankle was illegal, and he should have been penalized and fined for the play.

Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego reports that Lissemore should be back for San Diego’s Week 1 contest against Arizona.

Bill Barnwell of Grantland calculates the top 10 fastest starting skill position players for each team and comes up with the Tennessee Titans as the fastest NFL team. The Chargers are No. 20.

Jordan Beane of Chargers.com talks with defensive lineman Corey Liuget in this video. Tourek Williams also is mic’d up for the Seattle game.

ESPN NFL Nation Cardinals beat writer Josh Weinfuss reports that Arizona defensive lineman Darnell Docket suffered a season-ending knee injury in practice on Monday, tearing the anterior interior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Although unfortunate, that news should help the Chargers, who face Arizona in the season opener on Sept. 8.

It’s another devastating blow to Arizona’s defense, which lost glue guy linebacker Karlos Dansby in free agency, and also linebacker Daryl Washington due to a yearlong suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

However, the Cardinals did receive a bit of good news on Monday. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that defensive back Tyrann Mathieu will come off the physically unable to perform list on Tuesday, and could be healthy enough to play against the Chargers in the regular-season opener.

Darren Smith of The Mighty 1090 talks with cornerback Shareece Wright about his team’s performance against Seattle in this audio link.
