Morning Links: Rivers climbs QB rankings

In this ESPN Insider pieceInsider, NFL analyst Ron Jaworski moves San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers up 11 spots in updating his quarterback rankings from this Summer to No. 6 on his list.

Rivers is his biggest mover up Jaworski’s list with his impressive play through the first month of the season.

Jaworski: “He's been adding some [Peyton] "Manning" to his game -- diagnosing the defense and orchestrating plays from the line of scrimmage -- and that's never a bad thing. I couldn't be happier to see him improving because I love his personality as well as how he plays the game.”

Bill Simmons of Grantland takes the five points and the Raiders to cover against the Chargers in his weekly picks. Simmons: “I have very few gambling rules, but here's one: Anytime they have to change the time of a Sunday NFL game to an especially odd hour at night, and it's directly following a playoff baseball game that could stretch for four-plus hours and make that football game start after 9 p.m., and that game is happening in a beaten-down stadium that's been battling major sewage issues and will have the craziest fans in the league on hand ... TAKE THE POINTS.”

Trey Cunningham of Pro Football Focus provides three matchups to focus on in the Chargers-Raiders matchup.

Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego writes that San Diego’s explosive playmaker from last year, receiver Danario Alexander, is working to return from an ACL injury on his right knee suffered during training camp. Alexander already has grinded through rehab on five knee operations on his left knee.
