49ers sign vet OL Erik Pears

The San Francisco 49ers formally announced Tuesday what had been reported over the weekend by numerous outlets and the player's agent -- the team signed veteran offensive lineman Erik Pears to a two-year deal.

The 6-feet-8, 316-pound Pears spent the past five seasons with the Buffalo Bills, starting his last 32 games.

Pears, 32, initially joined the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2005 out of Colorado State. He played for the Oakland Raiders in 2009 before moving on to Buffalo.

He is expected to either compete for the starting left guard spot, vacated by Mike Iupati leaving for the Arizona Cardinals as a free agent, or to provide depth at right tackle behind Anthony Davis.

Pro Football Focus, though, gave him a -25.0 grade last season, which ranked 76th out of 78 guards in the NFL.
