SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- In an Insider piece, ESPN analyst Herm Edwards has ranked the top 10 cornerbacks in the NFL this season.
Edwards has a tie at No. 10, featuring two players who were in training camp with the 49ers this summer. The tie is between 49ers' No. 3 cornerback Tramaine Brock and Kansas City No. 3 cornerback Marcus Cooper. Edwards wanted to honor the top nickel cornerbacks with this spot.
It is great news for Brock, who has been sensational since taking over for an injured Nnamdi Asomugha (who has since been cut because of Brock's outstanding play) in Week 4.
However, the Cooper recognition has to sting the 49ers. He was a seventh-round pick who was a final cut in San Francisco. He was claimed by the Chiefs and has flourished.
But the 49ers can't feel too bad. They have a deep roster and Cooper likely wouldn't play too much for the 49ers this season.
In other 49ers notes:
The 49ers tried out defensive backs Dax Swanson and Chaz Powell on Monday. If there is interest, it will be for either the 53-man roster or on the practice squad if tight end Derek Carrier is promoted because of injuries to Vernon Davis and Garrett Celek. Davis suffered a concussion that caused him to leave Sunday's loss to Carolina. But he attended two charity events Monday, so it may be a sign he is recovering well. Still, he will have to pass a league test before being able to play.
