Mike Iupati earns praise in return

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers' offensive line is, once again, intact and it played at a high level Monday night against Atlanta.

Left guard Mike Iupati returned to the lineup after missing four games with a knee sprain. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman said Iupati had a strong night in his return.

"Good. Really good. Did really well," Roman said Thursday when asked about Iupati's play against the Falcons. "He was on it from an assignment standpoint and physically as well. Great to have Mike back out there."

In other 49ers' notes:

  • Roman was complementary of Arizona's strong defense. He said the Cardinals play an "old school 5-2" defensive front.

  • Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha will retire with the Raiders on Friday. He spent the first eight years with the team. The 49ers cut him this season in what was his first San Francisco. He has not gotten any looks since the 49ers released him.

  • Quarterback Colin Kaepernick is a proud member of the NFC West: "My opinion is it's the toughest division in football. There are a lot of great teams, a lot of great players in this division."
