Without further ado, here's the San Francisco 49ers training camp opening-day mailbag:
Jacob from Sacramento wants to know if I think first-round pick Jimmie Ward will win the starting nickel cornerback job.
Bill Williamson: I do, yes. Ward was drafted to play the nickel right away and to be a starter at safety down the road. Unless he gets hurt or absolutely fails in learning the defense in camp, I see Ward playing a big role Week 1 at Dallas.
Karl from San Jose wants to know if I think fifth-round pick Aaron Lynch will play much as a rookie.
BW: He’s an interesting player, as the linebacker has big skill. If Lynch is as good as some people in the NFL think he can be, I can see him getting playing some snaps on defense on passing downs as the season progresses.
Nikki from San Francisco wants to know if I think seventh-round pick Kaleb Ramsey will make the 53-man roster.
BW: The defensive lineman is a guy I have my eye on. There are certainly no givens for a seventh-rounder, and the 49ers are deep at the position, so it’s not going to be easy for the Boston College product to make the roster. But coaches raved about him in the offseason. He has some real ability, so I could see Ramsey, on the strength of a strong preseason, sneaking onto the roster.
