Is outside receiver help answer for 49ers?

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- It's a natural question: Could the San Francisco 49ers show interest in Cleveland receiver Josh Gordon?

Gordon is a talented receiver who is reportedly on the trading block. The 49ers have a big hole at the position and a surplus of draft picks. So, is a deal possible?

Well, yes, anything in the NFL is possible. But I would say it isn't likely.

Gordon has had some off-field issues and with the 49ers knee deep in the Aldon Smith saga, it might be difficult for the team, internally and in the community, to take on another player with problems.

There is no doubt Gordon would help the 49ers in the short-term. But with Mario Manningham coming back and star Michael Crabtree perhaps back for the stretch run, the 49ers may not feel like they need to pursue Gordon. But if the issues at receiver don't improve soon, perhaps desperation will come into play.

Cleveland is also reportedly open to dealing receiver Greg Little. He is a big receiver who has 11 catches this season and 114 catches in the past two seasons combined. For the right price he could be an interesting add for the 49ers.

Meanwhile, Lavelle Hawkins is reportedly working out in Detroit on Monday. He was a preseason star for the 49ers. Perhaps San Francisco could consider looking at him again.
