SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- As expected, Aldon Smith and Mario Manningham are active for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers. Eric Wright and Tank Carradine are inactive. San Francisco activated all four players to the 53-man roster in the past week.
Smith and Manningham will have roles Sunday. Smith has missed five games while seeking treatment for substance abuse. Manningham hasn’t played since suffering a knee injury last December. Wright and Carradine will be eased back to the lineup.
Manningham’s activation for the game means special-teamer Kassim Osgood is inactive. He has been a core special-teams player. It will be interesting to see if the special teams suffer without Osgood and Nate Stupar, who was recently cut. But special teams is the first area to be affected when injured players start to come back.
It is a byproduct of the 49ers having a deep roster.
