In today’s college football game, it’s all about who’s next. Who’s the next top recruit or freshman phenom that’s going to take the sport by storm?
Alabama wide receiver Calvin Ridley certainly fits the bill. He was No. 1 at his position coming out of high school, and his offensive coordinator, Lane Kiffin, recently said he has the ability to one day be the best wide receiver in college football. He even compared Ridley to players like Amari Cooper and Marqise Lee.
The comments likely sent Crimson Tide fans in a frenzy, but Nick Saban had a different message for fans in his most recent press conference this week.
"I wouldn't make an assessment like that for any freshman," Saban said. "I don't really think it's fair to any freshman. The guy hadn't even played yet.
“I think the guy's got a lot of ability. Hopefully we can help him develop the confidence and knowledge and experience at his position so that he can play and contribute this year. But I wouldn't put that kind of expectation on any young player."
That’s so typical of Saban to ruin the party. But seriously, can we at least wait until the guy plays his first game?
