Reviewing Kentucky's scrimmage

Kentucky coach Joker Phillips wasn't ready to name a starting quarterback coming out of last Saturday's scrimmage, but it sounds like he's getting close.

In fact, there could be some sort of announcement coming Tuesday. Senior Mike Hartline had the edge with his experience going into the preseason, but Phillips said it's remained a three-man battle with sophomore Morgan Newton and redshirt freshman Ryan Mossakowski.

"We want a quarterback who can win the game now for us," Phillips said. "We have to go figure out who gives us the best chance to win the game. Hopefully, we can go figure that out after watching the video. They all did some good things."

Whoever it is, Phillips said the Wildcats have to be more efficient in the passing game. He said all three quarterbacks missed open receivers in last Saturday's scrimmage.

An already strong Kentucky running game, led by senior running back Derrick Locke, has been bolstered this preseason by freshmen Brandon Gainer and Raymond Sanders, although Phillips said both players fumbled in the scrimmage.

Defensively, the addition of junior college safety Mychal Bailey looks like it will pay big dividends for the Wildcats. Phillips likes Bailey's combination of speed and tackling ability.

Also, Ronnie Sneed has forged slightly ahead of Qua Huzzie in the battle for the starting middle linebacker job. Huzzie has missed some time with a foot blister.

Here's a report on the Wildcats' scrimmage as compiled by the Kentucky sports information staff.
