A few SEC recruiting notes, including Alabama getting another commitment, thanks to our colleagues at ESPN's Scouts Inc. and Tom Luginbill:
Ed Stinson, DE
South Dade H.S.
Scouts Grade: 80
Position Rank: 23
Ed Stinson, a one-time Florida State pledge, has committed to sign with Alabama over LSU, ESPN affiliate Web site CrimsonConfidential.com reports.
The 6-foot-4, 227-pound Stinson, rated No. 23 nationally as a defensive end, was recruited to play outside linebacker in Alabama's 3-4 defense. Stinson also has offers from the Seminoles, Auburn, Miami-Florida, South Florida and Florida International.
ESPN's Craig Haubert said of the news, "As national signing day approaches Alabama has several prospects it could add especially on the defensive side of the ball, but they did not need to wait to land one of their targets as Ed Stinson committed to the Tide Friday."
"The former Florida State commit is a defensive end with a tall wiry frame that can be a productive edge rusher for the Tide. He flashes a good burst, will use his hands and reach, and can exploit a blockers mistake. He needs to keep filling out his frame and keep developing his game versus the run, but even if he does not develop into a strong run defender he can provide Nick Saban's defense with production in pass rushing situations."
"Stinson is now the eight defensive line prospect addition for Alabama as they try and bolster the quality and depth of their front line. The athletic Florida native could possibly also be used as an outside linebacker in Alabama's scheme."
Pat Patterson, WR
Noxubee County H.S.
Scouts Grade: 81
ESPN150 Rank: 114
Position Rank: 14
Pat Patterson, one of the nation's top uncommitted wide receivers, has canceled his official visit to Tennessee for this weekend and might travel to Mississippi State instead. Patterson informed ESPN affiliate Web site InsideTheGrove.com of the change via text message.
Patterson previously listed Alabama, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Southern Miss as his finalists. Now, he claims the Vols have been eliminated.
Daren Bates, S
Olive Branch, MS
Olive Branch H.S.
Scouts Grade: 77
Position Rank: 61
Daren Bates, a 195-pound safety from Olive Branch, Miss. who registered 90 tackles and 900 total yards of offense this fall, has committed to the Tigers.
Bates, once headed to Arkansas State, also holds offers from Alabama and Tennessee.
He told ESPN affiliate Web site AuburnUndercover.com, "I'm excited and I can't wait for signing day to make it official. I've been to Auburn before and I really like it there. The coaches are really great. They seem to want me there, and it just feels like the place I need to be."
Justin Jones, TE
Scouts Grade: 78
Position Rank: 30
Justin Jones of Heritage (Conyers, Ga.), ranked No. 30 among tight ends nationally, has committed to East Carolina over Vanderbilt.
Heritage coach Chris Pack told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Thursday, "[ECU head coach] Skip Holtz and offensive coordinator Steve Shankweiler were in today and Justin committed during his in-home visit with them."
The 6-foot-7, 235-pound prospect was once set for Kentucky. Jones also has offers from South Carolina, Alabama-Birmingham and Louisiana-Monroe.
Josh Morgan, RB
Pasadena City College (CA)
Running back Josh Morgan has committed to continue his career at Kentucky after finishing up at Pasadena City College, ESPN affiliate Web site KentuckyInk.com reports. He chose the Wildcats over Oregon State and Washington.
Originally from Crespi (Encino, Calif.), the 5-foot-10, 210 prospect rushed for 1,100 yards (7.2 average) and eight touchdowns and caught 34 passes for 342 yards and two more scores last fall.
