There were a few too many missed tackles. And, yes, Penn State moved the ball some between the 20's.
But the bottom line for Alabama's defense was that it kept Penn State out of the end zone, extending its home winning streak to 16 straight games.
The Crimson Tide wore down the Nittany Lions for a 24-3 victory on Saturday, coming up with four turnovers and keeping Penn State's freshman quarterback off balance most of the night.
This defense isn't going to be confused for last season's national championship defense. Net yet, anyway. Some younger guys need to keep coming, and the Tide will also get their best defensive player back next week against Duke. Junior end Marcell Dareus missed the first two games because of an NCAA-mandated suspension.
This is a defense that will be a lot better in late October than it is right now.
It's also a defense that has given up just two field goals in its first two games.
