Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy and Mississippi State offensive tackle Derek Sherrod were among the 16 recipients of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards, which were announced Thursday.
McElroy has a 3.83 GPA in business marketing at Alabama. Sherrod has a 3.53 GPA in business at Mississippi State.
Each of the 16 winners claims an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship, and one of the 16 will take home the 21st William V. Campbell Trophy, which is known more commonly around the country as the Academic Heisman.
Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first-team player and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.
