Cam Newton allegedly shopped for cash

With Auburn unbeaten and entertaining thoughts of playing for a national championship, allegations have surfaced that star quarterback Cam Newton was shopped to Mississippi State for thousands of dollars by former Mississippi State player Kenny Rogers, who identified himself as a representative of Newton's.

This alleged solicitation occurred early last December right after Newton, then the top junior college prospect in the country, made an official visit to Mississippi State. Newton announced later that month that he would sign with Auburn.

Newton's father, Cecil Newton, has denied any wrongdoing and said that if Rogers were trying to solicit money from Mississippi State, he did it without the the Newtons' knowledge.

Auburn coach Gene Chizik was emphatic Thursday night on his weekly radio show that Newton was "eligible at Auburn, period. End of story."
