Domestic violence charge does in Smith

The Opelika-Auburn News is reporting that former Auburn H-back Eric Smith was arrested and charged with third-degree domestic violence on Feb. 22.

Auburn announced earlier this week that Smith had been dismissed from the team for violating unspecified team rules. This wasn't Smith's first brush with the law. He missed the first game of the 2009 season after being charged with third-degree assault stemming from a fight outside a hotel in Auburn. Smith was accused of knocking another student unconscious.

Smith was used almost exclusively as a blocker last season. He only carried the ball one time and also caught five passes. With Smith no longer around, that could ensure that 290-pound Ladarious Phillips stays at fullback. Phillips will be a redshirt freshman in 2011, but worked some at defensive tackle leading up to the BCS National Championship Game.
