Leaving Starkville for Oxford

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- I'm getting ready to make the hour and 45-minute trek to Oxford to check in on Ole Miss' preseason camp.

The Rebels will scrimmage Saturday, and I'll have an update.

Also, check out the SEC blog Saturday morning for my Q&A with Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen. I had a 30-minute sitdown with Mullen on Friday, and he has a very clear vision of where he wants to take this program.

Nobody said it's going to be easy. There's a reason the Bulldogs haven't won more than four SEC games this decade.

Mullen's plan for climbing out of the lower echelon in the league revolves around one central theme: Owning the state of Mississippi in recruiting.

"We have to win most of the in-state battles," Mullen said. "For us to succeed here, we better get the kids that we want. If we get at least 15 of the top 20 players we want in the state every year, we have a chance to be a really good team. If we get 18, we have a chance to be a great team. If we get 20, we have a chance to be a championship team."
