Georgia junior tight end Orson Charles is one of eight players to be named as a semifinalist for the Mackey Award, which is presented annually to the top tight end in college football.
Charles, a 6-foot-3, 241-pound native of Tampa, Fla., is the Bulldogs’ leading receiver through 10 games with 32 catches for 395 yards and five touchdowns. Starting all 10 games and the past 20 in a row, Charles has played a pivotal role in a Georgia offense that is leading the league in pass efficiency and is ranked second in the SEC in total offense (438.7 yards per game).
The last two Mackey Award winners have come from the SEC -- Arkansas' D.J. Williams last season and Florida's Aaron Hernandez in 2009.
