Vanderbilt unveils new uniforms

The new uniform craze is continuing, as Vanderbilt unveiled its new threads for the 2012 season Wednesday.

Sixteen Vandy seniors served as models at the Barnes & Noble Vanderbilt Bookstore, showing off nine different combinations of Nike uniforms that the Commodores could wear this fall. No word yet if any players will be auditioning for model roles in the upcoming Zoolander sequel.

The new uniforms were designed by Vandy's football staff and are made with Nike's high-tenacity Cordura knit fabric, featuring black, gold and white jerseys and pants. The big surprise of the night was the unveiling of a white helmet. Honestly, it's pretty sweet. It's sharp and I approve. Remember, the Commodores debuted a black helmet last season.

Coach James Franklin is all about selling his program and making Vandy more popular among elite prospects, and you better believe that recruits look at uniforms. Why do you think Maryland brought out those hideous, yet attention-grabbing uniforms last season?

However, these uniforms aren't as loud as Maryland's. They're stylish and simple, especially with the addition of the white helmet. Here are some notes the school released about the new uniforms:

  • For the first time since 1994,"Vanderbilt" will be displayed on the front of the jerseys. The name will be in all caps above the jersey numbers.

  • A gold "anchor" emblem adorns the home plate or front "V" neck of all the jerseys. Last year, the Star V logo was stitched there.

  • "Anchor Down" text is stitched in the interior of each jersey neckline.

  • Nike's iconic "flywire" stitching is incorporated into the high impact shoulder area of each jersey.

  • The gold jersey top features black shoulder coverings, black lettering and black numbers. Last year, the gold jersey had white numbers.

  • All jerseys have an updated circular SEC patch stitched over the right breast. The Nike swoosh is over the left breast.

  • Star V logos will adorn each hip of the pants. In 2011, a lone Star V logo was located on the left front of the uniform pant.
