And just like that, the playful Texas A&M sign is gone.
Hours after generating all that national attention, the Texas A&M sign that went up in Gainesville, Fla., praising the Aggies and taking shots at the SEC, was taken down, according to the Gainesville Sun.
The billboard, which sat at the intersection of Northwest 13th Street and 53rd Avenue and was about four-and-a-half miles away from Florida's campus, read: “You've been annexed by Aggie Nation. The Best Academics & Cleanest Program in the SEC. WHOOP! Real Football. Real Tradition."
The Aggies host No. 24 Florida on Saturday in their season opener.
Texas A&M made it very clear on Tuesday that it was not responsible for the sign and had nothing to do with it going up in Gainesville. After sending a cease-and-desist letter that alleged trademark infringement, billboard owner Clear Channel replaced the billboard.
“To protect any trademark we’ll take it down, and if they resolve it, we’re happy to put it back up,” Jim Cullinan, head of communications for Clear Channel, told The Sun.
Cullinan also told The Sun that a Houston media company representing a group called Aggie Nation bought the billboard. However, it appears that the billboard was created by someone not affiliated with Texas A&M, Cook said. For starters, the Texas A&M faithful don't refer to themselves as being part of Aggie Nation.
Texas A&M is investigating the matter.
