Recapping Auburn's scrimmage

Posted by ESPN.com's Chris Low

The quarterbacks got to play "real" football in Auburn's scrimmage last Saturday.

Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn allowed his quarterbacks to go live, meaning they were fair game to be hit during part of the scrimmage.

The defense won the scrimmage, using coach Gene Chizik's scoring system. The deciding play was a fumble by freshman Onterio McCalebb on the final series.

The focus offensively Saturday was running the ball, as the Tigers continue to put in Malzahn's spread offense. The practices have been closed this spring, but there's clearly optimism within the program about the progress of the offense. Receivers coach Trooper Taylor called Malzahn a "genius" after Saturday's scrimmage.

The three quarterbacks, Kodi Burns, Neil Caudle and Barrett Trotter, split reps evenly.
