2005 Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush has decided to forfeit his coveted award. The former USC running back becomes the first player in the 75-year history of the award to forfeit the trophy. Bush has been under pressure since his 2005 campaign at Southern California was vacated.
The New York Yankees escaped with an 8-7 win in Tampa Tuesday night. New York jumped out to a 6-0 lead before allowing 7 runs to the Rays in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Yankees later tied the game and eventually won in ten innings, reclaiming first place in the AL East.
Jets' nose tackle Kris Jenkins won't play again this season. Jenkins tore the ACL in his left knee Monday night against Baltimore and will have season-ending surgery. An MRI Tuesday morning confirmed the team's fears. Because it's the same knee that required reconstructive surgery last October, Jenkins' career could be in jeopardy.
Mets' closer Francisco Rodriguez violated a restraining order by sending text messages to the mother of his children. Rodriguez sent dozens of messages in the weeks after being accused of assaulting the woman's father outside a family lounge at Citi Field. Already facing third-degree assault and harassment charges, Rodriguez will face additional charges of criminal contempt for sending the messages, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Clinton Portis has apologized for his comments addressing the NFL investigation of the New York Jets' treatment of TV Azteca reporter Ines Sainz. Portis commented that both sides have wandering eyes when the sexes are mixed in such a setting. The league quickly condemned comments made by Portis on the radio Tuesday. The NFL investigation stemmed from allegations that a few players made catcalls directed at Sainz on Saturday while she was waiting to interview Jets' QB Mark Sanchez.
The Packers' running game took a hit Tuesday. Green Bay RB Ryan Grant is out for the season with a right ankle injury. Grant, who was injured in Sunday's win over the Philadelphia Eagles, will require surgery to correct a torn ligament in his ankle that will leave him on crutches for 10 to 12 weeks, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Grant piled up 1,200 yards in each of the past two seasons.
Wide receiver Chris Rainey was arrested Tuesday and charged with aggravated stalking, a third-degree felony, for allegedly sending a former girlfriend a threatening text message. While the University of Florida did not announce any disciplinary action against Rainey, Gators' offensive coordinator Steve Addazio said, "Chris Rainey is not a part of our team right now. That's really all I have to say on that."
The Seattle Storm held home-court advantage Tuesday night, winning Game 2 of the WNBA Finals. Seattle defeated the Atlanta Dream 87-84, taking a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series. League MVP Lauren Jackson scored 26 points to lead Seattle, while Iziane Castro Marques and Angel McCoughtry each had 21 points for Atlanta in defeat. Game 3 is Thursday night in Atlanta (8:00 PM ET, ESPN2).
