When Denny Hamlin said he was coming out guns a blazing, we didn't know he meant it so literally.
With the NFL, NBA, NASCAR, college football, and college basketball all in season, we have a fun-filled weekend of sports ahead of us. What will you be watching? And what kinds of merchandise will you be purchasing while you watch? Here are our recommendations on both fronts. Enjoy another edition of For Sale Friday, won't you?
NBA: Doubleheader Delight Friday on ESPN
Utah at Atlanta (7 ET) and Portland at Oklahoma City (9:30 ET)
After an appetizer of Jazz-Hawks, we get a tasty dish of Trail Blazers-Thunder. A game that’s noteworthy mostly for what it could have been, if Greg Oden was a healthy NBA player and not still a fixture on the bench. So, to prepare for the game, we suggest taking a trip back in time with this classic Oden-Durant clock and imagining the Magic-Bird levels of greatness this rivalry could have (and might still … anyone?) brought us.
College Football: Crunch Time
Saturday at 3:30 (ET) on abc/ESPN
Before we get to some Top 25 showdowns – No. 23 South Carolina vs. No. 22 Florida and No. 19 Mississippi State vs. No. 12 Alabama, both at 7:15 (ET) – we’re looking forward to seeing good old JoePa try for win No. 401 against Ohio State. If you’re a Penn State fan and want to show your allegiance but can’t afford to bid on Paterno’s actual glasses, may we suggest purchasing this lovely Penn State cow figurine, which – don’t worry – is wearing a pair of JoePa glasses itself.
NFL: Ryan Bowl
Sunday at 1 (ET)
In a much-anticipated football Sunday (Randy Moss’s first game with the Titans, the Patriots facing off against the Steelers, etc.) we’re looking forward to Jets vs. the Browns, aka the Ryan Bowl. Yup, Jets coach Rex Ryan faces off against his twin brother, Rob, the Browns’ defensive coordinator. For those of you on team Rex who want to show your allegiance to the New York side of the family, do we have a treat for you. Feast your eyes on this t-shirt, commemorating one of Rex’s classic lines from “Hard Knocks.” Wear it with pride, Rex fans.
NASCAR: Second To Last Chance
Sunday at 3 (ET) on ESPN
There are only two races left in the Chase and Denny Hamlin holds a lead of 33 points over second-place (and four-time defending champion) Jimmie Johnson. Are you a fan of the 11 car who hopes Denny continues to bowl over the competition in Phoenix? Then may we suggest purchasing your very own Denny Hamlin bowling ball? Maybe you can’t take it to victory lane, but you can take it to the … regular lanes.
