Few have coached more NBA players than Mike Krzyzewski

Though he has never coached a game in the NBA, Mike Krzyzewski has coached his fair share of NBA players.

As head coach of Duke and the United States men's national team (1990, 2006-16), Coach K has coached 105 NBA players.

There have been 321 head coaches in NBA history. According to Elias Sports Bureau research, 36 of those 321 have coached as many NBA players as Krzyzewski. That means that despite never coaching in the NBA, Krzyzewski has coached more NBA players than nearly 90 percent of the coaches in NBA history.

Krzyzewski will lead the U.S. team in its 2016 Olympics debut Saturday in a group-stage game against China.

Some other nuggets, courtesy of Elias:

Only five active coaches -– Doc Rivers, Gregg Popovich, Mike D'Antoni, Rick Carlisle and Alvin Gentry -– have coached as many as NBA players as Krzyzewski.

Among those who coached fewer NBA players, the one with the most wins is Red Auerbach, who won 938 regular-season games and coached 101 NBA players.

Here are some other player-related nuggets:

Of the 105 NBA players Krzyzewski has coached, 53 played for him at Duke and 52 played at another school (college or high school).

Six players -– Kyrie Irving, Elton Brand, Carlos Boozer, Christian Laettner, Mason Plumlee and Shane Battier -– played for him at Duke and for Team USA. (Bobby Hurley did not play on the 1990 World Championship team; he did play in the Goodwill Games, which were not included for this exercise.)

If Irving plays all eight games at the Olympics, he will have played 25 games for Team USA under Coach K. That's more than twice as many games as he played for him at Duke (11).

The non-Duke player to play the most for Krzyzewski is Carmelo Anthony, who has appeared on five of the coach's U.S. teams: 2006 World Championships, 2007 Tournament of the Americas, 2008 Olympics, 2012 Olympics and 2016 Olympics.

Assuming Anthony plays in all eight games at the Olympics, including exhibition games, he will have played in 63 games for Krzyzewski. Anthony played 35 games at Syracuse for Jim Boeheim, who is a Team USA assistant coach. (Syracuse and Duke did not play each other during Anthony's one college season.)

Eleven of the 12 players who played for Krzyzewski on the 1990 World Championships team -– including Alonzo Mourning -- went on to play in the NBA.

The only players from North Carolina -– Duke's biggest rival -– to play for Krzyzewski on Team USA are Harrison Barnes and Antawn Jamison.

Note: The 105 number includes players yet to play in an NBA game, including Brandon Ingram; Marshall Plumlee, who was undrafted but signed guaranteed contract with Knicks; Michael Gbinije, a 2016 second-round pick who signed a contract with the Pistons (he played for Krzyzewski at Duke before transferring to Syracuse); and Elliot Williams, who played for Krzyzewski at Duke before transferring to Memphis.
