Tom Brady turns in top Week 13 Total QBR

Tom Brady

BradySix quarterbacks threw for over 300 yards in Week 13, but Tom Brady’s efficiency and production withstood them all as he led the league in Total QBR this week.

After a pedestrian first quarter (29.8 QBR on six action plays), Brady turned it on during the middle of the game. His QBR rose from game-low 29.8 at the beginning of the second quarter to a game-high 95.2 at the end of third as the New England Patriots turned a 3-0 lead into a 31-3 blowout of the Indianapolis Colts.

Brady ended up with a 93.6 QBR for the game as his play in the fourth quarter was largely irrelevant to the outcome of the game, and thus did not affect his QBR very much.

Top 5 Total QBR - Week 13

Aaron Rodgers was a close second to Brady as he records his sixth game with a 90+ QBR this season. Rodgers only eight such games from 2008-10. After Rodgers threw his fifth interception of the year in the second quarter, he rebounded with a nearly flawless performance that raised his QBR from a game-low 22.2 to a final rating of 92.4. For the season, Rodgers still has the highest QBR of any quarterback in the NFL.

Now Tim Tebow may not have been towards the top in this Week’s QBR rating (he is 17th), but he is improving as a passer. Tebow’s passing was much better on Sunday (149.3 NFL passer rating), but he did – and did not - do a lot of things that caused his QBR to be average (49.9).

Tebow had no success running the ball as he had zero rushes that went for first downs for the first time as a starter in the NFL. He also took two sacks, one for 10 yards that created a third-and-19 (which they failed to convert) and one that resulted in a fumble that was recovered by the Vikings.

On the positive side, Tebow completed 10 of his 15 passes, which was his highest completion percentage in a start ever. Plus the Elias Sports Bureau tells us that Sunday was Tebow’s fifth game-winning drive in the fourth quarter or OT, tying the most by a quarterback in his first 10 starts since the merger.
