Picking the 5-12 games in your brackets

• Of all the teams in this year's field, 12th-seeded Harvard (vs 5-seed Vanderbilt) had the longest Men’s Basketball Championship drought (1946 was the Crimson’s only previous NCAA Tournament appearance).

• Three 5-seeds have reached the national championship game, but all three of them lost: Butler in 2010, Indiana in 2002 and Florida in 2000.

• Of the four 5-12 games, 12-seed Long Beach State is the only team playing in its own time zone (at Portland, OR).

• Twice since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1985, 12-seeds have gone 3-1 in the Round of 64 against 5-seeds: 2002 and 2009.

• Since 1990, a 12-seed has upset at least one 5-seed in the Round of 64 every year but 2000 and 2007.

• Our College Basketball Power Index says the Cal-USF game in Dayton is a bigger mismatch than any of the other 5-12 games. Cal is BPI No. 30, USF is No. 64.

• A possible sleeper coming in as a 12-seed? BPI has Cal ranked No. 30. If the Bears beat USF in the first round, they would face BPI No. 29 Temple.

• The biggest mismatch of the 5-12 games which are already set? BPI ranks Wichita State 9th, and Virginia Commonwealth 49th.
