Delmon Young could do no wrong against the Yankees.Forget the fact that it was the New York Yankees that they beat. The ALCS sweep by the Detroit Tigers was one of the most dominant postseason performances in major-league history.

The Elias Sports Bureau tells us that the Tigers are the fifth team to sweep a best-of-seven postseason series without ever trailing in any game.

The others were the 1963 Los Angeles Dodgers (also against the Yankees), 1966 Baltimore Orioles (against the Dodgers), 1989 Athletics (against the San Francisco Giants), and the 2004 Boston Red Sox (against the St. Louis Cardinals).

Lowest ERA by Starting Rotation
Best-of-7 Postseason Series

The Tigers scored more runs in the clinching Game 4 (8) than the Yankees scored in the entire series (6) in finishing off their third postseason sweep.

They also swept the Kansas City Royals in the 1984 ALCS and the Oakland Athletics in the 2006 ALCS.

Max Scherzer made it a clean sweep by the Tigers starting rotation, striking out a postseason career-high 10. Per Elias, he became the first pitcher to take multiple no-hit bids into the sixth inning against the Yankees in postseason play. He also did so last year in Game 2 of the ALDS.

The Tigers starting rotation had an 0.66 ERA, the second-lowest ever by a starting rotation in a best-of-7 series, topped only by the 0.61 ERA by the 1966 Orioles in the World Series.

Yankees hitters hit .157 for the series, their lowest batting average in a postseason series in any length.

LCS MVP Delmon Young became the first player to drive in the game-winning run in four different games in a postseason series.

He has driven in a run in five straight postseason games overall, matching the longest streak in Tigers history, a mark shared by Bill Freehan and Craig Monroe.

Young is hitting .333 with five home runs and nine RBI against Yankees pitching over the last two postseasons. Yankees pitchers have only been able to get him to swing-and-miss at a fastball twice on 62 pitches. He’s mashed the others for seven hits, including a pair of home runs.

Best Win Pct vs Yankees
MLB Postseason History

The Tigers became the second team to beat the Yankees in a postseason series in consecutive years, joining the Giants, who did so in the 1921 and 1922 World Series.

They are now 10-3 all-time in postseason play against the Yankees, the best winning percentage for any Yankees opponent. They've won five straight postseason games against the Yankees, the longest such winning streak for any team.
