Mike Vick can do something few other NFL quarterbacks have when the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the San Diego Chargers on Monday (8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN/WatchESPN). Elias Sports Bureau research notes that Vick could become the seventh quarterback to win a Monday Night Football start with three teams.
Steelers are Monday Night Football stalwarts
The Steelers are 42-24 (.636) all time on Monday Night Football, the third-best record by any team, and their number of wins trails only the 49ers (47) and Cowboys (43).
Since coach Mike Tomlin’s hiring in 2007, the Steelers are 9-2 on Monday Night Football, but they are still seeking their first overall win in California. They are 0-2 (both Sundays) in Oakland against the Raiders and 0-1 (a Monday) in San Francisco against the 49ers.
Ironman Rivers tries to build on player of the week award
Philip Rivers was named the Week 4 AFC Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 358 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in a 30-27 win over the Cleveland Browns. It was just the second time in the past three seasons that Rivers had a game with as many as three touchdown passes and no interceptions. Rivers had five TD passes and three interceptions in the season’s first three weeks as the Chargers started 1-2.
Rivers was aided greatly in Week 4 by his receivers amassing yards after the catch. They averaged 10.1 yards after the catch per completion Oct. 4, the best rate for a game Rivers has started since Week 11 in 2010 against the Denver Broncos. The Chargers are averaging 7.2 yards after catch per reception this season, second-most in the NFL behind the Chiefs (7.3).
Assuming Rivers makes the start tonight, it will be his 149th consecutive start, the second-longest active streak behind Eli Manning, and the fourth-longest of all time.
Touchdown milestones within reach for Chargers
Rivers needs just one touchdown pass to tie Dave Krieg for 13th-most in NFL history at 261. Tight end Antonio Gates needs one touchdown catch to become the ninth player in NFL history to have at least 100 receiving touchdowns. He would also become the 22nd player in NFL history to have 100 touchdowns.
