Numbers to know: Kansas' bench shut out

If the Kansas Jayhawks are going to be a contender, they might need a consistent scoring option to emerge off the bench. For just the second time in 15 seasons, Kansas’ bench was held scoreless. Duke captured its fifth Maui Invitational title with a 68-61 win. In a combined 30 minutes of action, Naadir Tharpe, Conner Teahan and Justin Wesley attempted just one field goal and didn’t have a rebound or an assist. The last time the Jayhawks didn’t get a point off the bench was a loss to Illinois in the 2001 Elite Eight.

Iona orders seconds of 30-10

Certainly, 30 and 10 is impressive. It’s even more impressive when two teammates pull it off in the same game. Scott Machado scored nine of his career-high 33 points in the second overtime to lead the Iona Gaels over St. Joseph’s 104-99. Machado added 10 assists to join Nate Wolters as the only D-I players with 30 points and 10 assists in a game this season. Meanwhile, Michael Glover chipped in 34 points and 15 rebounds. It’s just the second time in the past 10 seasons that a player has posted a 30-point, 10-assist game while a teammate went for 30 points and 10 rebounds. It was previously done by Fairleigh Dickinson against St. Francis (NY) in February 2005.

Purdue allows 8 field goals

Western Michigan simply couldn’t find the bottom the net on Wednesday. The Broncos connected on only eight field goals in an 80-37 loss to the Purdue Boilermakers. It goes down as the fewest field goals allowed by a Purdue defense in school history, overtaking the previous record of nine by Pittsburgh in 1947. The Broncos didn’t have a player connect on more than two field goals, and their leading scorer finished with eight points. Western Michigan shot just 17.8 percent from the field, the lowest against a Big Ten team over the past 15 years.

Tim Frazier goes for 20 and 10 - again

On Wednesday, Frazier did it again for the Penn State Nittany Lions, with 26 points and 11 assists in its 82-71 win over Youngstown State. That matches the most 20-point, 10 assist games in the Big Ten over the past 15 seasons. In fact, the last major conference player with more such games in a season was Chris Thomas for Notre Dame in 2001-02.

Camels crush Iowa

For just the fourth time in school history, Campbell beat a team from a power conference. This one was in convincing fashion, rolling over the Iowa Hawkeyes 77-61 in Iowa City. Eric Griffin led the way with 23 points on 10-for-11 from the field. Campbell shot 62.2 percent from the floor, the third highest for an opponent in Iowa City over the past 15 years. On the season, the Camels are shooting 55.7 percent, second in the nation to Texas Tech (55.8). Campbell’s most previous win over a power conference school came last season against Auburn.
