Paterno comes back for 400th win

Penn State's Joe Paterno won his 400th career game Saturday, becoming the third head coach across all NCAA divisions to reach that win total.

The only head coaches who have more wins than Paterno are John Gagliardi (whose St. John's (MN) Johnnies won Saturday) with 477 wins, and Eddie Robinson, who won 408 games at Grambling.

If the Nittany Lions win out (including a bowl game), Paterno would finish 2010 with 404 career victories.

Milestone Victories

In 2001, Paterno tied Bear Bryant's all-time wins record of 323 as the Nittany Lions beat Northwestern, 38-35. A week later, Paterno would claim the record for himself with a 29-27 win over Ohio State.

How far ahead in the win column is Paterno among active FBS head coaches? Second behind Paterno is Ohio State's Jim Tressel with 237 victories. If Paterno didn't win another game, it would likely take Tressel almost two decades to catch Paterno. "JoePa" won his 237th game in 1992!

Paterno has defeated 79 different teams in his 45-year career. More than 30 percent of his wins (122 of 400) have come against five opponents: 27-0 against Temple; 24-0-1 vs. Maryland; 25-2 vs. West Virginia; 23-4 vs. Syracuse; and 23-7-1 against Pittsburgh.
