Here’s a list compiled by Stats & Information:
1968 World Series Game 5 -- A key play in this game was Cardinals baserunner Lou Brock being thrown out by Willie Horton in the fifth inning of an eventual 5-3 Tigers win. The play was a key one in turning the series, as the Tigers won the last three games to win the title from the Cardinals.
1973 World Series Game 2 -- Athletics outfielder Joe Rudi throws out Mets baserunner Bad Harrelson, who was the go-ahead run, at home plate in the 10th inning to keep Game 2 tied. Willie Mays, in the on deck circle, claims that Oakland’s catcher Ray Fosse applied a phantom tag to Harrelson, to no avail. Mays would get the winning hit in the 12th inning.
1975 World Series Game 6 -- Reds left fielder George Foster threw out Red Sox baserunner Denny Doyle at the plate on Fred Lynn's fly ball with the bases loaded and no outs in the nnth inning, with the score tied, 6-6. In the 11th inning, Dwight Evans made a fantastic catch of a Joe Morgan fly ball and turned it into a double play, doubling Pete Rose off at first base.
1980 NLCS Game 5 Houston's Luis Pujols is nailed at home plate on a 9-4-2 relay in the second innings, with the Phillies' Manny Trillo making a tremendous relay. The Phillies end up winning the series in extra innings.
1987 World Series Game 7 -- Cardinals left fielder Vince Coleman throws two runners out at the plate (in the second and fifth innings) to keep the Cardinals in the game. They would lose to the Twins despite Coleman’s heroics.
1991 World Series Game 4 -- Braves baserunner Lonnie Smith is thrown out at the plate 8-4-2 on a Terry Pendleton double in the fifth inning. The collision between Smith and Twins catcher Brian Harper was particularly violent.
1995 ALDS Game 2 -- Bernie Williams is thrown out at the plate by Mariners outfielder Alex Diaz (with a relay from Luis Sojo) to preserve tie game between Yankees and Mariners in the 12th inning. The Yankees went on to win in the 15th on a Jim Leyrtiz home run.
2000 World Series Game 1 -- Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter’s relay throw nails Mets baserunner Timo Perez at home plate to end the top of the sixth inning. The Yankees would win the game in extra innings on a walk-off hit by Jose Vizcaino.
2003 ALDS Game 3 -- Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek blocks the plate on a grounder back to Derek Lowe and Athletics baserunner Eric Byrnes collides with Varitek's leg and slides past the plate, never touching it. Varitek eventually tags him out to preserve a tie game in the sixth inning and the Red Sox go on to win 3-1 in 11 innings.
2011 ALCS Game 4 -- Rangers right fielder Nelson Cruz throws Tigers baserunner Miguel Cabrera out at the plate to complete a double play, with the score tied in the eighth inning. The Rangers would go on to win in extra innings.
