Looking at position battles

With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers starting their offseason program next week, it’s time to take a look at some of the most competitive position battles.

Right guard: At the moment, this is a toss-up between Jamon Meredith and Oniel Cousins. One of them could step forward and claim the job. It also is possible the Bucs will address this position later in free agency or in the draft.

Third wide receiver: Veteran Louis Murphy was signed recently, but he’s not even a lock to make the team. The Bucs have Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams as their starters. There has to be some doubt about Williams, because he has had some off-field issues. The Bucs need to get deeper, and faster, at wide receiver.

Second and third cornerback: Upon his signing, Alterraun Verner instantly became the top cornerback. But, after that, nothing is certain. Second-year pro Johnthan Banks, who had a bumpy rookie season, is one candidate to start. Newcomer Mike Jenkins, who has had an up-and-down career, is the other option. Whichever one doesn’t end up winning the No. 2 job will become the nickelback.
