McCown was signed as a free agent from Chicago in March and he still is in the process of learning coordinator Jeff Tedford’s offense.
“Every time you sit down to learn a new offense, it’s overwhelming,’’ McCown said. “You can kind of stick your head in the sand or you can just embrace it, say it is what it is and start putting the time in. You just embrace it. It’s fun, to a degree. You’re learning someone’s way of how they built the system. Jeff has a way of how he built the system.’’
Tedford was a longtime college coach, but this will be his first time calling plays in the NFL. McCown said he and Tedford are off to a good start.
“It’s been great,’’ McCown said. “I enjoy learning from him and I’m learning a lot. You get a guy that’s coming from the college game, he’s been around football for a long time, but you get a fresh perspective on things. That’s been the best part of it. I enjoy working with Jeff. It’s good to be able to talk football, talk plays and how he sees this play fitting here and this play fitting there. It’s vital for the playcaller and the quarterback to be on the same page. You have to have a good relationship because you have to have a feel where he’s going. We’re still building that. Obviously, it’s still early. But so far, so good. I’m really enjoying my time with him so far.’’
