Alex Tanney brings bag of tricks

TAMPA, Fla. – Alex Tanney is famous, but not for the reason he wants.

The quarterback, who was signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is featured in this video, which is now a must-see for every Tampa Bay fan. The video features some spectacular throws in which Tanney hits a variety of targets (goal posts, basketball hoops, etc.) with long passes.

"I hope it’s not my legacy," Tanney said.

Tanney, who is now with his fifth NFL team, wants to make it in the league. At the moment, he is fourth on the depth chart behind Josh McCown, Mike Glennon and Mike Kafka.

“I’m really excited about the opportunity here," Tanney said. "It’s tough because I’ve been bouncing around. I’m just trying to get somewhere where I can really develop and learn the system and get some reps."

But the tape never lies, and up to now, trick throws are what Tanney is best known for.

"I’m told he’s a YouTube sensation or something like that," coach Lovie Smith said. “I’m behind the times on a lot of that. On the football field, he did some good things."

Tanney said the YouTube video was something he and some of his friends decided to do at the end of spring practice at Monmouth College.

"It was just grabbing a bag of balls and going out and having fun," Tanney said. “My buddy edited and threw it up online, and it went viral. We had a lot of fun with it."

The video has close to four million clicks.

"I think it was great exposure for our college and for Division III football," Tanney said. "We’re never on any type of televised game and no one had ever really heard of Monmouth College. Just to get that exposure on ESPN and some of the major broadcasting companies was fun."

For the record, all the trick shots are real, Tanney said. But he admitted some of them took quite a few tries to complete successfully. But Tampa Bay fans aren’t going to see any tricks out of Tanney this preseason.

"I don’t do it anymore," Tanney said. "I’m retired from the trick shots."

And focused on trying to make an NFL roster.
