TAMPA, Fla. -- After an 0-3 start, a lot of people are writing off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' playoff chances.
That’s logical since only 3 percent of the teams to start 0-3 have made the playoffs since the NFL went to its current postseason format in 1990. But, under some unique circumstances prior to 1990, the Bucs started 0-3 and made the playoffs.
That happened in the strike-shortened 1982 season. The Bucs started 0-3 but finished 5-4 in a nine-game season. Due to the strike, the NFL went with a 16-team postseason tournament.
The Bucs were the seventh seed in the NFC at a time when only five teams from each conference made the playoffs under normal circumstances.
