NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The NFL released the preseason schedule on Thursday. Dates and times haven’t been announced, but here’s a first look at the opponents for the Tennessee Titans:
Week 1 (Aug. 12-14) vs. San Diego Chargers
Comment: Ken Whisenhunt is the Chargers' offensive coordinator again after 23 games as the Titans head coach. The reception is bound to be chilly for a coach that oversaw a bottoming out of the Titans franchise.
Week 2 (Aug. 19-21) vs. Carolina
Comment: Will Cam Newton play? The defending NFC champions make sense as a regional opponent, as opposed to the Chargers and Raiders. The Panthers beat the Titans in the regular season last year 27-10 at Nissan Stadium.
Week 3 (Aug. 27) at Oakland Raiders
Comment: The tradeoff for a prime-time appearance on national TV is a cross-country trip. High-profile young quarterbacks Marcus Mariota and Derek Carr can make it an attraction if both are healthy and both Mike Mularkey and Jack Del Rio choose this as the dress-rehearsal game in which starters play the most.
Week 4 (TBD) at Miami Dolphins
Comment: It could be an awful turnaround, presuming this game is played on Thursday, Sept. 1 and the team will have gotten back late from Week 3 in Oakland just four days earlier.
Of note: To ensure things are especially vanilla in the preseason, the NFL has scheduled the Titans against three teams they will face in the regular season – the Chargers, the Raiders and the Dolphins.
